Web Tool Smackdown: Coolors
My Smackdown:
(Feel free to speed up the video! It ended up being longer than intended!)
Coolors is just one of many web tools for artists I have found recently. In my smackdown, I cover its features and its uses for any digital artist or designer. Coolors mainly functions as a color palette generator, but also lets you explore the palettes of others, determine value, and color pick. The pro version includes even more tools that assist with designing, but I focus on what features are in the free version, as that is what I personally use. Coolors is used by many reputable designers and is a great way to brainstorm colors and get more cohesive designs for digital work. I would even argue that palettes through Coolors can be helpful with traditional work, as comparing the contrast between colors is just as useful in translation. This tool also features an option to pick palettes out of images, which can be great when working from references, or trying the get a better understanding of the base colors from an image. The integration of Coolors into graphic design work is very prevalent, with the website even providing example designs with any palette you have saved or selected for visualization.
As a digital and traditional artist, understanding color theory remains important. Digital tools like this that let designers visualize their color options in a controlled manner can be applied to almost anything. Coolors has gotten me out of art block before, by providing palettes to work with and helps me with maintaining enough contrast in my work. If color is a stressor for your designs, I would definitely suggest implementing Coolors into your work process. I think anyone who needs to make designs could benefit by using Coolors, and its many free features. The ease of export and connecting to other applications also makes it very accessible for any use.
Hi Melanie,
ReplyDeleteCoolors is beneficial for artists by providing a fast way to generate color palettes. I have never personally used coolors before, but I really enjoyed learning about the apps different features, such as uploading a photo and being able to create a color palette from the photos colors.
Coolors seems like such an amazing tool for artists! This would have been very helpful when I was choosing a color palette for a header the other day. Do people typically use this along side programs like Illustrator or Procreate?
